Facebook says it plans to simplify privacy controls at the popular social-networking service to appease critics.

"We've spent the last couple of weeks listening to users and consulting with experts in California; Washington, DC, and around the world," Facebook spokesman Andrew Noyes said.

"The messages we've received are pretty clear. Users appreciate having precise and comprehensive controls, but want them to be simpler and easier to use."

Facebook contended that members like new programs rolled out at the California-based Internet hotspot but want easy ways to opt out of sharing personal information with third-party applications or websites.

"We're listening to this input and incorporating it into innovations we hope to announce shortly," Mr Noyes said.

Facebook has been under fire from US privacy and consumer groups, US lawmakers and the European Union over new features that critics claim compromise the privacy of its more than 400 million members.

New infrared images of the Milky Way globular cluster 47 Tucanae (this one recorded at a wavelength of 1.6 micrometers), reveal that both the cluster and the Milky Way's central bulge are 11 billion to 12 billion years old and may have formed simultaneously with the Milky Way's halo.

A preliminary analysis of elderly stars in the Milky Way appears to strike a blow against the prevailing theory of galaxy formation. The study suggests that several large and seemingly disparate chunks of the Milky Way galaxy formed at the same time from the collapse of a single blob of gas and dust.

That's in direct contrast to the leading galaxy-formation scenario, which holds that the Milky Way and other galaxies began small and grew bit by bit for the most part, gravitationally acquiring intergalactic gas and dust and merging with galaxies in their immediate neighborhood.

The new evidence, which astronomers emphasize is only tentative, comes from a new, ongoing study of a familiar globular cluster a dense, elderly grouping of more than a million Milky Way stars collectively known as 47 Tucanae. Earlier this year, Harvey Richer of the University of British Columbia in Canada and his colleagues began examining 47 Tucanae with two Hubble Space Telescope cameras the newly installed Wide Field Camera 3 and the Advanced Camera for Surveys, which stopped working early in 2007 but was revived by astronauts during the servicing mission last year.

The cluster lies near but not inside the Milky Way's bulge, a massive concentration of stars that surrounds the galaxy's core. But because the cluster shares several properties with the bulge, such as chemical composition and orbital motion, astronomers consider the age of 47 Tucanae a good proxy for that of the bulge.

An analysis of the Hubble portrait, which includes one of the deepest infrared views ever recorded, reveals that 47 Tucanae, and therefore the Milky Way's bulge, formed between 11 billion and 12 billion years ago, Richer reported May 4 at a symposium on stellar evolution at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore. He said previous age estimates that did not use the new Hubble camera and put the cluster at a more youthful 9 billion years old are simply not correct.

A wormhole is a theoretical 'tunnel' or shortcut, predicted by Einstein's theory of relativity, that links two places in space-time - visualised above as the contours of a 3-D map, where negative energy pulls space and time into the mouth of a tunnel, emerging in another universe.

There has always been a great deal of interest about time-travel. It has been the centre of many science fictions. Frankly, who wouldn't want to travel through time and aspire to a part of this surreal experience? But as of now, it seems the idea of time machine is still a dream. But according to eminent astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, the notion of time-travel is in fact, quite realistic and he strongly believes that humans would be able to travel millions of years into the future and repopulate their devastated planet. In an article earlier this month, published in the British tabloid, Daily Mail, the noted cosmologist outlined theoretically his ideas on time travel. It may be mentioned here that, this is his second surprise, after expressing his belief in the existence of extraterrestrials.

To put it simply, time travel means, moving between different points in time. The laws of physics accommodate the idea of time travel through what is known as 'wormhole'. According to Dr. Hawking, a wormhole is a “Tiny tunnels or shortcut through space and time that constantly form, disappear and reform within the quantum world. And it actually links two separate places and points of time”. A wormhole, which is also permitted by the Einstein's field equations of general relativity, is unfortunately too small (just a billion-trillion-trillionth of a centimetre) for people to pass through. However, scientists believe that it may be possible to catch one such wormhole and make it big enough for people or spaceships to enter and travel through time! But Prof. Hawking also believes that this applies only to forward movement in time. On the impossibility of backward time travel, the Professor explained that it would violate the law of causality, which says that effect must follow cause. But in the case of travel backwards in time, cause will have to follow the effect! He explains, if you go back in time and destroy the time machine, then how is it that you travelled to the past in the first place? The author of the best seller, “A brief History of Time”, also believes that radiation feedback might collapse any wormhole even if scientists manage to expand it to a usable size, making them useless for actual travel. But in that case, what is the other option? In his own words, “Time flows like a river and it seems as if each of us is carried relentlessly along by time's current. But time is like a river in another way. It flows at different speeds in different places and that is the key to travelling into the future”. It was Einstein who first proposed the idea that there are places where time slows down and there are others where time speeds up. And it is the black hole, the region of space-time from which nothing, not even light can escape due to its intensely strong gravity, which has a dramatic effect on time, slowing it down. And Dr. Hawking strongly believes that this particular nature of a black hole makes it a natural time machine!

Another key aspect of time-travel is travelling at the speed of light. Hawking explains, “believe it or not, travelling close to the speed of light transports you to the future”. Being a firm believer of time-travel, Dr. Hawking maintains that if such a mechanism were invented, a trip to the edge of the galaxy would take just 80 years! Would humans ever be able to travel through time in the future? Only time will tell.

Qubee, the first WiMax service provider in the country, is in operations for nine months now, and it is already making noise in the market.

Recently Jerry Mobs, the company's chief executive, spoke to The Daily Star and shared his experiences.

According to Jerry, one of the main issues that affect the whole industry is the extremely high price of the International Internet Gateway (IIG) connectivity, which is about two and a half times regional averages, such as Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka.

“If you compare Bangladesh to those nations, you will find that it's very expensive. And that cost is bourne not only by Qubee, but also by others, such as Banglalion, GP and all other ISP's in the market. This is preventing the growth of services in Bangladesh.”

“You may be able to get the customer but to connect them to the rest of the world, that's when it gets really expensive and 98 percent of my traffic goes out of the country -- that has to go through the international gateway.”

The price for 1Mbps in equivalent South Asian countries is around about $70 -- it is currently Tk 18,000 for the same in Bangladesh, he said.

That is the price all the internet service providers (ISP) pay, not just Qubee, which is the single biggest cost element in retarding their growth, the CEO said.

Jerry mentioned that they brought up the topic with Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and they responded positively. BTRC knows the issues and will have to look at all the stakeholders, as there are government revenues involved, he added.

“I have a feeling they understand the situation and are looking to achieve a sensible way forward that benefits all parties. It has to be a win-win deal. I have faith in the regulator that they will do a good job and everyone will be happy.”

Jerry believes the market potential is huge and growing all the time. “Cellular operators have almost 5 million people using the internet on the small screen and there are half a million to three quarters of a million connected at home. We are still looking to cover that market.”

“We've gone through our launch phase. Now we cover most main areas of Dhaka. We've got 8,500 subscribers on our network today and we are the fastest growing ISP, in terms of bandwidth -- we know that talking to Mango TeleServices and BTCL and probably number two or three in terms of single largest bandwidth customer,” he informed.

Since inception, Qubee learnt a lot about the market and optimised a lot of the network; and they have about 50 base transceiver stations (BTS) today. By mid June, they plan to increase that number to 120 throughout Dhaka.

“We have a couple of new projects coming up in June-July. There is a lot of work going on, primarily based around mobile devices, allowing people to move around the network and access a WiMax 4G network throughout Dhaka,” said Jerry.

On built-in WiMax modem enabled laptops, Jerry said the industry is working on it at the moment. The main focus now is to provide WiMax to as many potential users as possible, whether on a desktop or laptop, the CEO added.

“Our primary objective in the short term is to cover everybody and give them a chance to use high speed reliable internet services. We want to offer the ability to move around with dongle type devices, which is what our network will be able to support in June. I think around Q3 this year, embedded devices, such as bundled laptops with in-built WiMax devices, should start to happen," he said.

When asked if the company is on target, Jerry said they are a bit behind at the moment. “We are adding about 100 customers a day. Around about 30 percent of those are referrals from people who've used our services for a month or two.”

“I think we delivered in general on our brand promise, which is a good internet experience, a service that never sleeps and speed in happiness.”

On existing ISPs with wireless spectrums, he said: “When we invested in Bangladesh, we knew the process was pretty clear and that existing ISPs that already have the rights to use their spectrum, would continue. We don't see that as a big issue.”

“If people start to pull their spectrum to create larger groups of spectrum, and if they could offer similar services that creates another competitor with a large chunk of spectrum without benefits to the government by not having to pay a licence fee, to me that is wrong and we would object.”

“I don't think that is going to happen. The regulator here has operated within the rules and the rules of the auction are pretty clear.”

On rolling out 3G, Jerry said he sees it as a complementary service, and doesn't see his company competing with the cellular operators.

“WiMax is a 4G technology, so having experienced 3G around the world and WiMax, I have seen both sides of the performance. And WiMax is better than 3G.”

3G is a great complementary technology, which will help grow the market and internet penetration, he said. But people still need to have much higher bandwidth for their desktops and laptops, and WiMax can deliver that, he added.

“3G is great for small screens but when you plug it in on a desktop and want to play massive multiplayer online games or upload photographs, WiMax is a better technology.”

Over the last week, the phrase "delete Facebook accounts" has become a popular search topic on Google. Facebook's ever-changing privacy policies - and the outrage they evoke - are not new. But this time, the social-networking giant may have gone too far.

A few weeks ago, speaking at a Facebook developers conference, company CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg announced new features to integrate Facebook into its users' broader Internet experience. These tools are called social plugins and their ostensible purpose is to give you "more ways to experience the Web with your friends."

You may have seen some of these plugins in action. If you visit washingtonpost.com, for example, and you're logged into your Facebook account, you can see what your friends have been sharing from the news site. Many sites also feature a Like button that instantly adds your preference to your personal profile.

I like my friends and everything, but I don't really want to know what they're doing all of the time. Of course, I don't want them to know what I'm up to either. The next step, I imagine, would be for Facebook to show you every page everyone you know has visited on the Internet, giving you access to their browsing histories, in the name of sharing but in the service of marketing. Too much information.

There is, of course, more. Facebook's "instant personalization" feature has borne the brunt of criticism. The feature provides personal information to sites like Yelp, a user-driven city guide, and Pandora, a music-streaming site. If you remain logged into your Facebook account as you surf the Internet, this psychographic profile travels with you everywhere, tailoring the marketing message from each partner site you visit.

The default setting is for this feature to be turned on, which has prompted many online friends to post warnings via status updates, telling others how to opt out of the feature.

Judging by the outrage voiced by casual users and tech nerds alike, it's clear most people want to keep what happens on Facebook on Facebook.

In response, Facebook's head of public policy said Wednesday that the company will be introducing new, "simplistic" privacy options soon. He was speaking on a radio show and offered no further details.

Webheads have been buzzing this week about a group of New York University students who are developing Diaspora*, an open-source social-networking code that users can customize with their own privacy configurations. The group started last week with about $25,000 in its project budget, but has now raised almost $175,000 to build the software thanks to growing frustration with Facebook - and a well-read story in the New York Times.

It's a smart idea, with a lot of potential to reach a tech-savvy audience. Whether it helps the average user or results in many Facebook-like spin-off services remains to be seen.

This is all complicated by the fact that, with its 400-million-and-growing members, Facebook is the place to be. Other sites, like Friendster, MySpace and Orkut, can't touch its ubiquity. So even if Facebook makes changes in response to public pressure, ultimately, you have to play by its rules.

Since its inception in 2005 as a networking site for university students, Facebook has had its share of privacy issues. Its now-discontinued Beacon feature had the potential to instantly tell your friends which CD you purchased online - even if it was going to be a surprise birthday present for one of them. Last December, Facebook introduced new settings that resulted in users' names, profile pictures and gender being made public Internet-wide by default.

IBM developer Matt McKeon has created a startling graphic that shows the evolution of privacy on Facebook. According to the visualization, in 2005, none of your information was available to the entire Internet. And only a small portion of it was available to all Facebook users; i.e., your name, network, photo and gender.

By April 2010, the only piece of information that does not have the potential to be seen by all Internet users is your contact information and your birthday. This means your friends list, photos and wall posts are all vulnerable. (You can, of course, change privacy defaults to control what people see - if you can figure out how.)

There is not much revealing information on my Facebook profile. I've taken down all my likes and dislikes and have set up levels of privacy corresponding to my closeness with friends. I generally don't use my status updates as forums to vent my work frustrations or to tell people that I'm not home. This level of personal public disclosure works for me.

However, if Facebook's privacy options become even more complicated and the amount of time it takes to protect my data becomes overwhelming, I will shut down my account.

I've already sent $10 to the students at Diaspora* as insurance.

Pakistan blocks YouTube a day after shutdown of Facebook over Muhammad issue

A simmering clash between free speech and religious sensibilities in Pakistan burst from the streets onto the Internet on Thursday, as the government blocked the video-sharing site YouTube and other pages it deemed "sacrilegious" to the nation's Muslim majority.

The move followed a similar shutdown Wednesday of the social-networking site Facebook, which had drawn the ire of Islamist activists over a page inviting people to post drawings of the prophet Muhammad. At least 450 sites, including Wikipedia, were also cut off by midday Thursday, and the government said more blockages could come as its newly created "crisis cell" scoured the Web for inflammatory content.

The bans, which sparked raucous debate, removed hugely popular outlets from what has become a vibrant and freewheeling media scene in recent years. In doing so, the prohibitions also underscored that debates over religion remain forbidden in a nation where Islamists exert power by regularly -- and sometimes menacingly -- condemning actions they view as blasphemous.

"If Facebook and other such tools continue to be used for blasphemy by the Western nations, then we will target their embassies," said Faisal Javed, 21, a student at an Islamabad rally where demonstrators hoisted signs emblazoned with slogans such as "Death to Facebook."

The site shutdowns came after a lawyers group successfully petitioned a Lahore court for an injunction against Facebook, arguing that a page titled "Everybody Draw Muhammad Day!" was offensive. The page has been promoted as an exercise in freedom of expression, and it was developed after creators of the Comedy Central program "South Park" complained that network executives had edited out their attempts to render Muhammad. According to some interpretations of Islam, any depiction of the prophet is considered blasphemous.

The government, which is secular, said its efforts were aimed at blocking "derogatory" references to Islam and reflected the "will of the people."

"Such malicious and insulting attacks hurt the sentiments of Muslims around the world and cannot be accepted under the garb of freedom of expression," Foreign Ministry spokesman Abdul Basit told reporters.

State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said in Washington that the United States respects Pakistani efforts to protect the public from offensive images and speech but that Pakistan must also respect freedom of expression online.

Scott Rubin, a spokesman for YouTube, said that the site is working with Pakistani telecommunication officials to resolve the issue and that "we hope we restore service soon." He added: "This is up to Pakistan telecom authority."

Cartoons of Muhammad published in a Danish newspaper triggered deadly protests across the Muslim world in 2006, including in Pakistan. There was no indication Thursday that the sort of bans seen in Pakistan had been imposed in other nations, though countries such as China and Iran routinely block Web sites to control the flow of information.

In Pakistan -- a country of 180 million where the vast majority are poor, many are illiterate and just a tenth of the population has Internet access -- the crackdown highlighted tensions between two vocal constituencies: religious extremists and an urban, Net-connected middle class. A major difference between the two, commentators here said, is that the former is willing to take to the streets while the latter dukes it out online.

As bearded fundamentalist clerics roused protesters to wage jihad if the government did not cut ties with the West, Internet and e-mail debates about the topic swirled. Several of Pakistan's prominent bloggers and tweeters condemned what they said was an intimidated court's infringement of free expression.

"We're actually just drawing attention to something that could have slid by notice in Pakistan," said Awab Alvi, a Karachi dentist who hosts the popular current affairs blog Teeth Maestro.

Although Alvi joined with other bloggers to publicly condemn the Web site bans, he said they held divided opinions about the Muhammad caricatures themselves. And in several online forums, supporters of the Facebook shutdown slammed what they said was an unnecessary provocation of Muslims by Westerners who gave little thought to poking fun at deeply held beliefs. Among the backers was former military ruler Pervez Musharraf, an avid Facebook user who posted his support for the ban on his profile.

"We are not addicts, you know," Rida Fatima, a 17-year-old in a head scarf, said of her Facebook use, which she said she happily gave up to "defend" Muhammad.

Pakistan restricted access to YouTube and other Web sites in 2007, the same period during which a pro-democracy movement, led by lawyers pushing for an independent judiciary, staged protests that led to Musharraf's eventual ouster. The courts have since become aggressive arbiters of a wide range of policy issues, earning public esteem but also spawning worry in some quarters that judges are too willing to cater to religious populism.

"On what basis can a judge ban this? They don't have jurisdiction. They don't have anything but a few hurt feelings," said Sundas Hurain, a law student in Lahore who was a youth leader in the lawyers movement. "We fought for them because we want our rights protected. . . . Them doing this is a huge step back."

Hurain said her progressive student organization would wait to determine whether it would protest the ban. But she said many of her peers would be afraid to take on such a sensitive topic.

"Once something like this is decided, it becomes a measure of defending religion. It would be very hard even for a liberal judge to strike it down," said Babar Sattar, a lawyer and columnist in Islamabad. "It suggests that you're changing God's law."

SAN FRANCISCO — Google recruited a solid lineup of high-tech companies on Thursday to help it introduce Google TV, a new service that merges the predictable world of television programming with the more chaotic expanse of the Web.

Now it has to persuade the TV audience to turn the living room television into the newest on-ramp to the Internet.

Google TV, which the company introduced at its annual developer conference here, lets people visit any Web site from their televisions and easily search for programs and Web video without scrolling through unwieldy on-screen TV directories.

The service will be built into high-definition TVs and Blu-ray players made by Sony and a set-top box made by Logitech, which also makes PC peripherals like keyboards. It is powered by Google’s Android software, originally developed for smartphones. The devices will go on sale in the fall.

The effort is likely to face formidable challenges. Google must persuade television manufacturers other than Sony to use its software, and retailers other than the electronics chain Best Buy to sell the devices. And consumers have demonstrated little interest, so far, in connecting to the Web through their TVs.

What they have shown is price sensitivity, and the high-powered Intel Atom chips that will be at the heart of devices running Google TV are likely to add to their cost. Intel has spent billions of dollars developing those chips over the last few years in a high-stakes push to crack the market for consumer electronics.

The companies declined to discuss prices.

Howard Stringer, chief executive of Sony, the third-largest maker of flat-panel televisions in the United States market, appeared on Google’s stage to say Sony would build Google’s software into a high-definition television called the Sony Internet TV, as well as a Blu-ray player.

He also said Sony was likely to gradually adopt Google’s software, which he cited as more robust and comprehensive than the company’s own Bravia Internet service, for its other Internet-connected TVs.

Mr. Stringer was joined on the stage by the chief executives of Best Buy, Adobe, Intel, Dish Networks and Logitech, where they were interviewed about their plans by Eric E. Schmidt, Google’s chief executive.

Mr. Schmidt said that people had been talking about bringing the Web to the TV for two decades. “It’s much harder to marry a 50-year-old technology and a brand-new technology than those of us from the brand-new technology industry thought,” he said.

Devices running Google TV will also be able to run applications written for Android phones and will feature Google’s Chrome Web browser.

Logitech’s set-top box will allow people to receive Google TV without having to buy a new television set. The company said it was also working on keyboard-equipped remote controls and peripherals to allow people to surf the Web from the couch

Many companies have already tried to bridge the gap between the television and the Web. TiVo, Boxee, Roku and Vudu, now a division of Wal-Mart, all make devices that offer a variety of Internet video on the television. All have struggled to gain broad adoption, in part because most consumers do not want to hook another set-top box to their TVs.

Roku has sold more than 500,000 set-top boxes, but its sales took off only when the price sank below $100, said Anthony Wood, the company’s chief executive. Noting the premium prices that devices running Google TV would probably sell for, Mr. Wood said, “I don’t think it’s a threat as it is today, but certainly over time Google is going to get market share.”

Television manufacturers already sell so-called connected TVs with limited Internet ability, which in some cases is provided by a Google rival, Yahoo. Such models are likely to make up a quarter of all televisions sold this year, according to analysts. But many consumers do not even know they are buying that feature and usually make their shopping decisions based on the size and appearance of the set.

If Google’s effort is successful, it could create problems for traditional cable companies, as more people could look to the wealth of content on the Internet and bypass their cable provider’s profitable video-on-demand offerings.

“The video-on-demand experience has always been antiquated at best,” said Richard Greenfield, a media analyst at BTIG, a financial services firm. Google TV and similar efforts “put pressure squarely on cable operators and anyone in the business of distributing video content to improve their user experience.”

Google did not talk about its advertising strategy for Google TV, but it could use its formidable data-collection abilities to aim new types of ads at television-watching consumers. The company said users would have control over what information was shared with advertisers.

One advantage Google believes it has in courting other television manufacturers is the success of its Android platform for mobile phones — and the fact that TV makers like LG Electronics and Samsung already sell phones running Android. On Thursday, Google said that 100,000 new Android phones were activated every day, up from 60,000 in April — second in the industry only to phones from Research In Motion.

Google executives promoted the notion that Google seemed to have already surpassed its rival Apple in this respect, although Apple still has a far larger base of devices running the iPhone operating system. It recently reported that it had shipped 85 million iPhones and iPod Touches, and more than a million iPad tablet computers.

Apple could invest more in the TV business soon. It sells an Apple TV set-top box, which it deems a hobby and which most analysts view as a lackluster product. It would now make sense for Apple to update that product, adding a Blu-ray player, for example. Or Apple could offer its iTunes service to other set-top box and TV makers, or manufacture its own flat-panel television that links to iTunes.

“Google TV is more than anything finally going to create some energy over at Apple to make a television, or at least a version of the iPad that docks with a TV,” said James McQuivey, an analyst at Forrester Research.

In an interview, Vic Gundotra, vice president for engineering at Google, used the momentum of Android, a free open-source platform with few rules governing its use, to draw a sharp distinction with the control Apple exerts over devices running the iPhone operating system.

“If you believe that the only way to get a good smartphone is to bet on one man, one device, one carrier and one choice, that is a different model than we believe in,” Mr. Gundotra said. “We believe innovation doesn’t come from one man; it comes from all of us.”

People are more microbe than human, with microbes outnumbering our cells by 10 to 1. But strangely, scientists know more about the microbes that inhabit the soil and sea than those that call us home. Now, the genetic sequencing of 178 of these microbes will help close that gap.

Scientists have long known that our microbial inhabitants, collectively known as the microbiome, can contribute to disease. But culturing the cells outside of the human body can be difficult, complicating efforts to identify many of them, particularly rare species.

The Human Microbiome Project, funded by the US National Institutes of Health, has now used next-generation DNA sequencing technology to study these microbes straight from the source.

A sequel to the human genome project, the project is one of several around the world aiming to characterise the microbiome. It seeks to take a census of microbes from five key sites – the gut, skin, mouth, airways, and urogenital tract – to understand the way the microbes contribute to human health and disease.

So far, the project has sequenced the genomes of 178 microbes towards its ultimate goal of 900, identifying more than 500,000 new genes in the process.

Bacteria as balm

"By being able to characterise more of these species, I think we're gaining more ground in terms of beneficial organisms on the human body and how we can use them to benefit our health," says Karen Nelson, team leader at one of the project's four main sequencing centres, the J. Craig Venter Institute in Rockville, Maryland.

The sequencing project could help pinpoint microbes that contribute to disease, which could lead to new treatment strategies. For example, previous research revealed that the bacterium Faecalibacterium prausnitzii helps counteract the misdirected immune response that ravages the gut in people with Crohn's disease. Genetic sequencing may uncover other beneficial bacteria that could be used to treat – or prevent – disease, much as probiotic yogurt helps to regulate digestion.

So far, the project has focused on relatively simple microbes that do not have nuclei in their cells – bacteria and archaea. But project members are now turning their attention to larger organisms with nuclei, called eukaryotes, as well as viruses.

"To me, this is one of the most exciting projects I have worked on," says team member Jane Peterson of the NIH National Human Genome Research Institute in Rockville. "It really is the unknown."

The energy bands of complex particles known as plasmarons have been seen for the first time by scientists working with graphene at the Advanced Light Source. Their discovery may hasten the day when these crystalline sheets of carbon just one atom thick can be used to build ultrafast computers and other electronic, photonic, and plasmonic devices on the nanoscale.

Scientists working at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have discovered striking new details about the electronic structure of , crystalline sheets of carbon just one atom thick. An international team led by Aaron Bostwick and Eli Rotenberg of the ALS found that composite particles called plasmarons play a vital role in determining graphene’s properties.

“The interesting properties of graphene are all collective phenomena,” says Rotenberg, an ALS senior staff scientist responsible for the scientific program at ALS beamline 7, where the work was performed. “Graphene’s true can’t be understood without understanding the many complex interactions of electrons with other particles.”

The electric charge carriers in graphene are negative electrons and positive holes, which in turn are affected by plasmons—density oscillations that move like through the “liquid” of all the electrons in the material. A plasmaron is a composite particle, a charge carrier coupled with a .

“Although plasmarons were proposed theoretically in the late 1960s, and indirect evidence of them has been found, our work is the first observation of their distinct energy bands in graphene, or indeed in any material,” Rotenberg says.

Understanding the relationships among these three kinds of particles—charge carriers, plasmons, and plasmarons—may hasten the day when graphene can be used for “plasmonics” to build ultrafast computers—perhaps even room-temperature quantum computers—plus a wide range of other tools and applications.

Strange graphene gets stranger

“Graphene has no band gap,” says Bostwick, a research scientist on beamline 7.0.1 and lead author of the study. “On the usual band-gap diagram of neutral graphene, the filled valence band and the empty conduction band are shown as two cones, which meet at their tips at a point called the Dirac crossing.”

Graphene is unique in that electrons near the Dirac crossing move as if they have no mass, traveling at a significant fraction of the speed of light. Plasmons couple directly to these elementary charges. Their frequencies may reach 100 trillion cycles per second (100 terahertz, 100 THz)—much higher than the frequency of conventional electronics in today’s computers, which typically operate at about a few billion cycles per second (a few gigahertz, GHz).

Plasmons can also be excited by photons, particles of light, from external sources. Photonics is the field that includes the control and use of light for information processing; plasmons can be directed through channels measured on the nanoscale (billionths of a meter), much smaller than in conventional photonic devices.

And since the density of graphene’s electric charge carriers can easily be influenced, it is straightforward to tune the electronic properties of graphene nanostructures. For these and other reasons, says Bostwick, “graphene is a promising candidate for much smaller, much faster devices—nanoscale plasmonic devices that merge electronics and photonics.”

The usual picture of graphene’s simple conical bands is not a complete description, however; instead it’s an idealized picture of “bare” electrons. Not only do electrons (and holes) continually interact with each other and other entities, the traditional band-gap picture fails to predict the newly discovered plasmarons revealed by Bostwick and his collaborators.

The team reports their findings and discuss the implications in “Observations of plasmarons in quasi-free-standing doped graphene,” by Aaron Bostwick, Florian Speck, Thomas Seyller, Karsten Horn, Marco Polini, Reza Asgari, Allan H. MacDonald, and Eli Rotenberg, in the 21 May 2010 issue of Science, available online to subscribers.

Graphene is most familiar as the individual layers that make up graphite, the pencil-lead form of carbon; what makes graphite soft and a good lubricant is that the single-atom layers readily slide over one another, their atoms strongly bonded in the plane but weakly bonded between planes. Since the 1980s, graphene sheets have been rolled-up into carbon nanotubes or closed buckyball spheroids. Theorists long doubted that single graphene sheets could exist unless stacked or closed in on themselves.

Then in 2004 single graphene sheets were isolated, and graphene has since been used in many experiments. Graphene sheets suspended in vacuum don’t work for the kind of electronic studies that Bostwick and Rotenberg perform at ALS beamline 7.0.1. They use a technique known as angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES); for ARPES, the surface of the sample must be flat. Free-standing graphene is rarely flat; at best it resembles a crumpled bedsheet.

Using electrons to draw images of composite particles

“One of the best ways to grow a flat sheet of graphene is by heating a crystal of silicon carbide,” Rotenberg says, “and it happens that our German colleagues Thomas Seyller from the University of Erlangen and Karsten Horn from the Fritz Haber Institute in Berlin are experts at working with silicon carbide. As the silicon recedes from the surface it leaves a single carbon layer.”

Using flat graphene made this way, the researchers hoped to study graphene’s intrinsic properties by ARPES. First a beam of soft x-rays from the ALS frees electrons from the graphene (photoemission). Then by measuring the direction (angle) and speed of the emitted electrons, the experiment recovers their energy and momentum; the spectrum of the cumulative emitted electrons is transmitted directly onto a two-dimensional detector.

The result is an image of the electronic bands created by the electrons themselves. In the case of graphene, the picture is x shaped, a cross-sectional cut through the two conical bands.

“Even in our initial experiments with graphene, we suspected that the ARPES distribution was not quite as simple as the two-cone, bare-electron model suggested,” Rotenberg says. “At low resolution there appeared to be a kink in the bands at the Dirac crossing.” Because there really is no such thing as a bare electron, the researchers wondered if this fuzziness was caused by charge carriers emitting plasmons.

“But theorists thought we should see even stronger effects,” says Rotenberg, “and so we wondered if the substrate was influencing the physics. A single layer of carbon atoms resting on a silicon carbide substrate isn’t the same as free-standing graphene.”

Detailed ARPES results reveal that the energy bands of ordinary charge carriers (holes) meet at a single point, but conical bands of plasmarons meet at a second, lower Dirac crossing. Between these crossings lies a ring where the hole and plasmaron bands cross. The new band picture indicates how strongly plasmons couple to the charge carriers in graphene.

The silicon-carbide substrate could in principle weaken the interactions between charges in the graphene (on most substrates the electronic properties of graphene are disturbed, and the plasmonic effects can’t be observed). Therefore the team introduced hydrogen atoms that bonded to the underlying silicon carbide, isolating the graphene layer from the substrate and reducing its influence. Now the graphene film was flat enough to study with ARPES but sufficiently isolated to reveal its intrinsic interactions.

The images obtained by ARPES actually reflect the dynamics of the holes left behind after photoemission of the electrons. The lifetime and mass of excited holes are strongly subject to scattering from other excitations such as phonons (vibrations of the atoms in the crystal lattice), or by creating new electron-hole pairs.

“In the case of graphene, the electron can leave behind either an ordinary hole or a hole bound to a plasmon—a plasmaron,” says Rotenberg.

Taken together, the interactions dramatically influenced the ARPES spectrum. When the researchers deposited potassium atoms atop the layer of carbon atoms to add extra to the graphene, a detailed ARPES picture of the Dirac crossing region emerged. It revealed that the energy bands of graphene cross at three places, not one.

Ordinary holes have two conical bands that meet at a single point, just as in the bare-electron, non-interacting picture. But another pair of conical bands, the plasmaron bands, meets at a second, lower Dirac crossing. Between these crossings lies a ring where the hole and plasmaron bands cross.

“By their nature, plasmons couple strongly to photons, which promises new ways for manipulating light in nanostructures, giving rise to the field of plasmonics,” Rotenberg says. “Now we know that plasmons couple strongly to the charge carriers in graphene, which suggests that graphene may have an important role to play in the merging fields of electronics, photonics, and plasmonics on the nanoscale.”

Physicists prove Einstein wrong with observation of instantaneous velocity in Brownian particles

A century after Albert Einstein said we would never be able to observe the instantaneous velocity of tiny particles as they randomly shake and shimmy, so called Brownian motion, physicist Mark Raizen and his group have done so.

"This is the first observation of the instantaneous velocity of a Brownian particle," says Raizen, the Sid W. Richardson Foundation Regents Chair and professor of physics at The University of Texas at Austin. "It's a prediction of Einstein's that has been standing untested for 100 years. He proposed a test to observe the velocity in 1907, but said that the experiment could not be done."

In 1907, Einstein likely did not foresee a time when dust-sized particles of glass could be trapped and suspended in air by dual "." Nor would he have known that ultrasonic vibrations from a plate-like transducer would shake those glass beads into the air to be tweezed and measured as they moved in suspension.

Raizen's research, published in Science, is the first direct test of the equipartition theorem for Brownian particles, one of the basic tenets of statistical mechanics. It is also a step toward cooling glass beads to a state in which they could be used as oscillators or sensors.

The equipartition theorem states that a particles' kinetic energy—the energy it possesses due to motion—is determined only by its temperature, not its size or mass.

Raizen's study now proves that the equipartition theorem is true for Brownian particles; in this case, glass beads that were three micrometers across.

Raizen says he and his colleagues can now push the limits, moving the particles closer to a for observation.

"We've now observed the instantaneous velocity of a Brownian particle," says Raizen. "In some sense, we're closing a door on this problem in physics. But we are actually opening a much larger door for future tests of the equipartition theorem at the quantum level."

There, he expects that equipartition theory will break down, leading to new problems and solutions surrounding the quantum mechanics of small particles composed of many atoms.

Facebook Considers Censoring Content in Pakistan

Facebook said Thursday it may consider making content that is considered objectionable by Pakistan inaccessible to users in the country.

"We are analyzing the situation and the legal considerations, and will take appropriate action, which may include making this content inaccessible to users in Pakistan," Facebook said in an e-mailed statement.

A Pakistani court ordered on Wednesday that Facebook should be blocked because of a page inviting people to draw caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed.

Protestors took to the streets in Pakistan on Wednesday to protest against the Facebook page.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the country's telecommunications regulator, said on Thursday that it was also blocking YouTube because of its "sacrilegious" content, after trying all possible avenues to get the two sites to remove material it considered derogatory.

Though Facebook said it would consider making the content inaccessible in Pakistan, it has reservations.

"We are very disappointed with the Pakistani Courts' decision to block Facebook without warning, and suspect our users there feel the same way," Facebook said in the statement.

YouTube did not respond to a request for comment.

While some kinds of comments and content, such as criticism of a certain culture, country, religion, lifestyle, or political ideology may be upsetting for someone, that alone is not a reason to remove the discussion, Facebook said.

Facebook said that when dealing with user-generated content on global Web sites, there are occasions where content that is illegal in one country is not, or may even be protected, in another.

Most companies approach this issue by preventing certain content from being shown to users in the countries where it is illegal and that is Facebook's approach as well, it added.

The PTA said earlier on Thursday that it would welcome the authorities at Facebook and YouTube to contact the PTA for resolving the issue to ensure religious harmony and respect.

The Facebook page that triggered Pakistan's anger increased the number of fans on Thursday to about 88,000. The page is called "Everybody draw Mohammed Day!" and features a number of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed.

Google tries to push Web forward

Google Inc. kicked off its annual developer conference on Wednesday with a series of announcements and demonstrations that highlighted what's becoming possible online.

Speakers during the opening keynote at Google I/O explained how the shift to cloud computing, better Web browsers and more sophisticated applications are enabling Internet tools and experiences that were once reserved for desktop applications and dedicated devices.

"The Web is the most important platform of our generation," said Vic Gundotra, vice president of engineering at the Mountain View online giant. "Working collaboratively, we can move that Web forward."

A major theme of the morning session at Moscone West in San Francisco was the integration of HTML5 into Internet applications. The emerging standard for online programming enables rich multimedia content and elegant interfaces without additional downloads and plug-ins.

Google Product Manager Jeff Chang demonstrated how the markup language is allowing new capabilities in modern online browsers, including a drag-and-drop feature for attachments in Gmail.

Executives from Clicker.com, Adobe, Sports Illustrated and Mugtug showed off ways that HTML5 is allowing slick new features and visually compelling design in their online offerings. The latter company's Darkroom application, for instance, enables a powerful photo editing application to work through the browser, even when it's disconnected from the Internet.

Google also announced an open source, royalty-free standard for online video called WebM, which it said greatly enhances viewing experiences across the Web. It will be supported by Mozilla, Opera and Google's Chrome browsers. Likewise, all videos above a certain size uploaded to YouTube, which is owned by Google, will be encoded in the format going forward.

WebM is based around the VP8 technology that Google acquired when it bought On2 Technologies this year, which represents the "best-in-class codec for real-time streaming," said Sundar Pichai, vice president of product management.

In another announcement, Google previewed the Chrome Web Store, its answer to Apple Inc.'s popular App Store. It's a one-stop shop where consumers will be able find, download and review feedback on free and paid online applications.

As with Apple, once users create a log-in and type in their credit card number, they'll be able to buy new applications with a single click. The Chrome store will be available in more than 40 languages across 70 countries, but will initially be available only to users of the namesake browser. Pricing and standards policies weren't detailed on Wednesday, but Pichai said that 70 percent of the revenue from the applications will be handed to developers.

The store potentially provides an easier way for independent programmers to make money from their work, an ongoing challenge for - and gripe among - developers who have built tools for Google's platforms.

The announcements were at once an articulation of Google's broader online philosophy and responses to competitive challenges in the marketplace, said Ray Valdes, an analyst with Gartner Research.

"Google is basically restating and re-energizing its commitment to the Web and open standards," he said. "There's an idealistic aspect to that message, but there's also a pragmatic business aspect in terms of competition with Apple," as well as Microsoft, IBM and Amazon.com.

Several of the major announcements anticipated for the event, including Google's television platform and a new version of its Android operating system for smart phones, are expected today.
