We have had enough lengthy discussions over duplicate content and penalty imposed by search engines. Clearly, the opinion is divided among the tech users. People who are able to produce rich quality unique content aren’t worried about these factors directly. But it is indeed a headache for any webmaster if his/her content is sometimes duplicated by others and sometimes by himself and there begins the reason to worry. Does Google, the world’s biggest search engine giant, penalize duplicate content?
Google has already announced in their official blog, there is no penalty as such for duplicate content. But, the overall idea of Google is to provide better information to search users, in an effort to do so, sometimes duplicate content needs to be decided so as to send a search user to original content or the duplicate content, and which one to be ranked higher up the SE rankings. It is clear from Google’s own opinion that you won’t be penalized for duplicate content, but your ranking might be disturbed in certain cases.
If your content has been duplicated by another webmaster who site has more backlinks than yours, then his page might rank higher up the order than your original content. So, there you get hurt somehow. Having backlinks is not in our hands, we know that. And Google says, it is OK to have duplicate content, as long as you have some more interesting stuff in addition to the original content. In clear terms, it means, if you copy some content and add something more into it here and there, it is OK for Google, they won’t hurt you in any way. This doesn’t bypass the plagiarism issue though. Copying any article in part or full, is not fair. If you are a copy blogger, this is definitely not for you.
But sometimes, authors need to post their own articles in other blogs upon request. In that case, the original author is not included under plagiarsm, but the issue of duplicate content haunts the author badly. What is to be done in such cases? A link to the original article under the post will be better; adding some extra info in any of the contents, original or replicated, will be even better to do. Thus, one of the posts will stand out firmly and with a difference over the other, both being basically same. If you are in a hurry and cannot re-write extra portions in any of the posts, then at least replace a handful of words so that the two articles doesn’t become identical in text form.
