‘The Hurt Locker’ piracy: 50,000 people used

Voltage Pictures, the producer of ‘The Hurt Locker’ has decided to sue over 50,000 individuals who allegedly pirated the Oscar award winning film online. As of figures in 2008, Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has managed to threaten stern legal action against only 30,000 individuals on charges of piracy; in this recent case, Voltage Pictures has managed to initiate legal action against 50,000 people for just one film.

‘The Hurt Locker’ was said to be leaked 5 months before theatrical release, but that is not the only reason for the commercial flop of the film, explains Chris, a Yahoo blogger. And, whether the film was a hit or a flop, doesn’t minimize the legal threat for those 50k people who pirated the film online. But you may ask, how are these 50k people being chased? Well, according to a lawyer in the US Copyright group, all the concerned ISPs are complying with rules and providing the IP Addresses of those who downloaded the movie.

So, are you among one of those people who download pirated movies from online file sharing networks? Beware, anti-piracy group will catch your real identity; your ISP will reveal the details to law enforcement agencies. As of now, settlement offers are being made to the offenders, failing which, a full fledged lawsuit would follow.

Even if you aren’t downloading movies online, be careful if you’re downloading music MP3s. Because this anti-piracy legal campaign is not only about downloading movies, but also applies to music, software and everything else which is copyrighted. For a long time this campaign wasn’t firm enough to catch up the culprits, but now Voltage Pictures have set an example, many other producers would soon follow this example. Then what? It’s beyond your knowledge and control, actions might be initiated months after your downloaded a movie or MP3 album or software.
